A. Vellayan (born 9 January 1953, Chennai)[1] is the Chairman of century old Murugappa Group based in Chennai,India.
Fourth generation head of the $3 billion (sales) Murugappa group. Took over the reins as executive chairman from his uncle in November. More than a century-old, the group began as a money-lending business in erstwhile Burma in 1900. Today, Murugappa has 29 companies, whose interests include engineering, fertilizers, financial services, sugar, tea and bicycle manufacturing. Vellayan has plans to double sales in the next five years and is eyeing acquisitions particularly in the areas of sugar, abrasives and pesticides. Plays tennis regularly and counts Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj as his pal.
